School-Wide Strategies to Support Students with School Attendance Challenges
ACCESS NOW: School-Wide Strategies to Support Students with School Attendance Challenges
Across Canada, schools are grappling with rising absenteeism and school avoidance — challenges that directly impact student learning, well-being, and long-term outcomes. For many learners, especially those who are neurodivergent or experience learning or mental health challenges, this can lead to persistent absences and growing disengagement.
This session is designed to help school and district teams better understand the complex factors driving absenteeism and take meaningful steps to change them. Together, we’ll explore what makes school feel “impossible” for some students and how schools can build environments that feel safe, supportive, and accessible.
The webinar will focus on school-wide strategies that include:
- Developing an Education Support Team to coordinate interventions and build shared responsibility.
- Using assessments and data to gain a comprehensive picture of attendance challenges and root causes.
- Implementing action plans that remove barriers and foster consistent attendance over time.
If reducing absenteeism and re-engaging students is a priority for your school or district this year, this session will offer practical approaches you can begin applying right away.

Educators must be physically, mentally, and emotionally present to connect with students and provide quality instruction. Their mental health and well-being need to be ‘in check’ for this to happen. While we cannot control everything, it is our responsibility to increase the likelihood that our staff can be healthy at work. Starting with the end in mind, how can division leaders foster a sense of belonging and autonomy so that their staff feel valued and supported? What kinds of collective efforts will foster your staff’s sense of belonging and pride in the work being done?
It is not enough to simply acknowledge that there is a problem; division leaders can better create conditions for success when they have crucial insights into the pivotal measures that drive their staff’s well-being. This all starts with giving all of your staff a voice.
